Do you have relatives connected to Netley Abbey?
Do you have any relatives who lived or worked in Netley Abbey, Southampton, Hampshire or the Royal Victoria Military Hospital? If so, Julie Green and Brenda Findlay of Netley Abbey Matters would love to hear from you.
Julie and Brenda are collating stories and details of the people who lived and worked in the village and hospital in order to preserve them for posterity.
My own great-great-grandfather, Nathaniel Jones, lived and worked at the hospital as a Private for the Royal Army Medical Corp (RAMC), c.1896 – 1898. He married my great-great-grandmother, Sarah Ann Rees in August 1896 at the Register Office in South Stoneham. Moving to Hound Road where their second child, my great-grandmother, was born in November 1896.
The couple moved shortly afterwards to Hunnyhill, Newport on the Isle of Wight after Nathaniel transferred to HMP Parkhurst, as a prison warden. However, his tenure there was short-lived, being called up in early 1900, to serve in the 2nd Boer War, attached to the 9th Bearer Company, RAMC, 1st Cavalry Battalion.
