A little about my own family history research

I have been researching my own family history for over a decade. My main area of interest is my Welsh ancestry (South and West) and the branches hailing from the Suffolk Fens. Both branches have been traced back to the mid-17th Century, with both remaining settled within the same regions for almost 200 years. My ancestors were primarily agricultural labourers, farmers, turf cutters and miners; with the occasional military personnel, a couple of publicans, alongside a dressmaker, a music teacher, a shoemaker and a cinematographer.

My interest for family history was sparked when I was passed a bundle of letters, that contained some grainy copies of photographs and a roughly drawn 3 generational family-tree, that had passed between a 3rd cousin and my now deceased maternal grandmother. This led me to begin researching the Welsh connection between our families, that begin on my branch with my Welsh grandfather.

Researching my own family history has meant I have been continually increasing my knowledge of historical records, and to this end I am currently working towards The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies’ Higher Certificate.  My researches have only increased my passion and interest in genealogy and family history research.
